Flee question catchup  discussions

2004/03/30 13:11, Alantir:
This is just a recent example, but in my experience it's always like this. Is it only me, or is their some weird code enforcing it?

One exit, these are the attempts to flee.

It's ALWAYS like this. Either you flee on first or second attempt, or after 10 attempts. Bug or feature, or is it just happening to me?.. :)

2004/03/30 13:21, Tucker:
I tend to agree with you, should you fail the first flee attempts you can count on failing quiet a few afterwards. The same could be said about Rangers, it's extremely odd that 90% of the time when you flee from them it's in the direction you came from.

2004/03/30 13:25, Andróg:
And I thought you're going to ask something more specific or/and difficult. This one's easy to answer! ;)

I remember, last time I wrote about this - what I am going to write now too - I got flamed for like 25 posts, at least. ;)

Anyway, at such situations you have to 'refresh' your flee. Currently it is as Alantir's log shows. If you don't flee after first 2-3 (5) attempts you're chances to flee later are very small. I'd say it's even so that every next attempt has smaller chance to succeed. So, if you're in real trouble and need to flee right away, not wait for some 10+ attemps, pushing 'F' (or whatever binding you got for it) right after 4-6 failed attempts is wise. Could even say the 'Old-time' flee-spamming is still sort-of 'useful'. I've tested it quite some too (because I managed to mob myself once because of that ;)) and indeed - if you don't flee right away you 99% won't flee at all.

Not sure if it's meant to be like this or not, but it is.

2004/03/30 13:35, Alantir:
Heh.. You mean something like this (just tried it).

6 failed flees.

Trust me.. it's psychological. The new flee is a switch, it's either on or off. Trying to turn it on over and over will have no effect... Like my attempts above shows.

2004/03/30 13:37, Alantir:
Hmm.. copypasted that.. think I missed some.. But you get the idea. :)

2004/03/30 13:51, Francis:
What about flee on, flee off, flee on?

2004/03/30 13:56, Tucker:
Francis stole my idea! We're awaiting your paste on the test Alantir...

2004/03/30 14:08, Razoor:
Androg, you're wrong...only thing that'll do is make you flee back to the room and die :)

Something seems wrong with the fleecode atm, i failed ~12 flees like 5 times in a row with my scout :/

2004/03/30 14:19, Andróg:
'Androg, you're wrong...only thing that'll do is make you flee back to the room and die :)'

No, it won't! Or at least you got a rather small chance for that. You see, if you type 'F' in a room while NOone is fighting you, (at least) half of the time you simply get the 'But nobody was fighting you!' message and you won't even try to flee. Besides, presuming you're trying to 'refresh-flee' yourself out of a room with one exit to a room with 3+ exits, now when you succeed but still got a pre-spammed flee, you got at least 3 different ways to flee (presuming no no-flee flagged exits etc), so even if you don't get the msg I noted above you still got a rather small chance to flee back to the same room. :)

And Alantir, don't spam the 'f'. If you see you're going nowhere, just refresh it after few flees, in the log above it looks as if you're holding down your flee-binding. I've tested all this quite thoroughly (among various other places used golden cave, wake bear - 1 exit, bear moves - 3 exits, moves more, etc.) too. :)

2004/03/30 14:32, Alantir:
Hehe.. Androg, you're so full of failing facts. :)

Did you even play under the old flee? If you spam flee, you WILL end up either a few rooms away or (rather likely) back into the same room a couple of times (with a rather great chance of failing more flees there and eventually die).

If you flee when noone is fighting you. You get:

!>flee
You flee head over heels.
PANIC! You couldn't escape!

I.e. same chance as failing a flee with mobs in room. Most of the times you'll successfully 'flee' and end up in another room though.

If you ESCAPE with nobody fighting you, you get:

!>escape
You seek to escape...

Nobody was fighting you.

---

You're theory is wrong. And if you don't even know what happens when you fail a flee when noones fighting you, your 'thorough' testing i probably just as good. :)

2004/03/30 15:04, Prist:
For me it seems that i'm fleeing just fine until I meet some badass quickbolting overkillgroup, then I tend to fail 4-5 flees and die. Spamming flee just gets you killed.

2004/03/30 15:14, Andróg:
Alantir,

!>flee
You flee head over heels.
PANIC! You couldn't escape!

part. As I said, you don't always get that PANIC-etc msg. Sorry!, I don't remember exactly that msg you get, but the exact line it gives isn't important anyway. And most of the time, when you're 'f'ing while noone is fighting you, you won't flee to another room anyway. (this depends quite some on the amount of exits in the room, though)

Besides, I've said that now already in THREE posts. 'If you spam flee' /Alantir.
Who said ANYTHING ABOUT SPAMMING IT? You don't have to spam it. Please read my posts, before you comment them :)

2004/03/30 15:18, Rogon:
Come back when you failed 23 flees in a 3-exit room! Wish i had logged it :/

2004/03/30 15:43, Francis:
These sort of things might have something to do with randomness.
Especially if time is used to generate set. We could end up with the
MS patience crap. (if you choose new game too fast you get the same as the previous one)

2004/03/31 12:02, Elethre:
Random or not, it still sucks!
like 3 weeks ago i was traveling the woods collection herbs as i usualy do, and in the woods all e of moors i came across a resting noname dwarf and elf. Thinking they were most probably exping lowbies i desided to give it a try, after all i was in full fine chain except shining vambraces, fine gc, gleaming, etc. With fresh armour i tracked em down, entered room and started casting a fast bolt. to make a short story even shorter, in less than a minute, 20+ failed flees, 2 bashes and a few bolts later, i was dead, they have probably killed deers slower than me. Now since this was in a room with 4 exits i have decided to just do what i do best, permaidle and protaltrapp :P

This is my second time mobbing like this in three days running. Does this mean I am not attempting to flee? I have 11 dex and 15 will btw.

2017/03/13 07:13, Orlanth:
You are trying to flee alright, just bad luck (PANIC) /too tough opponents. You started to flee when you set your wimpy to max and hps were below that. Other way is to press flee which you did later, but in that moment it doesn't really help. Actually double flee might kill you in certain situations (that is issuing multiple flee commands to the command queue).

2017/03/13 18:33, Elestir:
You should use better absorb eq (e.g. fine metal set) if you plan to xp via quake. Else the risks outweigh the gains. But even then quaking is hardly the fastest way to xp.

2017/03/13 18:50, Merarl:
what is the fastest way to xp as a mage, with metals and without?

2017/03/13 19:01, Elestir:
Buffing in metals for charmies (like pack leaders).
If you are without metals, you will do best following some buffer and xp in group.

2017/03/13 19:04, Matthew:
I am a bn. do you even have a bn elestir?...

2017/03/13 19:38, Elestir:
Works for bn too.

2017/03/16 19:13, Svarten:
Here's some important advice you should already know if playing BN, or a quaking mage for that matter.

The best, and single most important thing you can do to improve your odds of fleeing when quaking mob packs like this, is to make sure you don't have the PANIC flag up when you start quaking. Read the top post for an example of what might happen to you when you have PANIC flag up. How's the prospect of 20+ fail flees in a row look to you when you can barely survive two?

Another good thing is to set a proper wimpy (current hps-1) before quaking, not after. (That mistake alone cost you a flee attempt in this case.)
Yet another is to start near full hps and fresh armour. With 95 max hps... well you should just always start every single quake with the PANIC flag gone, on full hps and with fresh armour. At higher levels or if quaking weaker mobs such as goats or sheep, you can be more careless with your hps. On that topic, always quake goats and sheep if you see them.
Another, don't quake single-exit rooms unless you really wanna gamble.
And yet another, DONT SPAM FLEE WTF.

2017/03/17 03:41, Belgarath:edited 1x
Svarten had another really good piece of advice is watching your panic flag. I never really paid attention to it, then when someone mentioned it to me i started seeing real differences with and without panic. Directly from 'Help panic':

When you are in a state of panic you will find that your offensive abilities are reduced.

So from what i've tested, charm will land a lot easier when you have no panic flag, and i'm sure it has something to do with your successful flee attempts as well.

Matthew you had really shitty luck with those flees :P From what i could tell (your hps and other things) you were level 12 or 13?

Also worth putting some pracs in dodge/parry, as Elestir mentioned the more parry splitters you have, whether they are mercs or players, the easier and quicker the xp. If you can lead these groups and absorb some damage it will be even quicker :)

2017/03/17 03:46, Matthew:
my question was whether I even got a flee attempt, it only says 'PANIC! You can't quit the fight' like when you get bashed, but NOT 'You attempt to flee'.

2017/03/17 06:24, Orlanth:
I see. I think you got 'You will attempt to flee!' message before PANIC!

*. CW HP:Fine Mana:Burning a powerful lioness:Fine>Wimpy set to: 94
You will attempt to flee!
A dark-maned lion strongly hits your left foot and shatters it.
A powerful lioness hits your left leg hard and shatters it.

And after that you got PANIC!

I don't debate if it's most efficient way to xp for lowbie BN or not, but if you are going solo it is more efficient mana-wise than casting lightning bolts or burning hands. That is, unless you die.

2017/03/17 16:20, Elestir:  edited 1x
The 'panic' flag that you can see in your stat/info reduces your effective level (maximum is probably -2 effective levels) and the effect is cumulative (it's random but let's say first time you get -1, then -1.5, then -2), duration is not cumulative though (and is pretty short - not more than 2 ticks if I remember).

So it not only reduces your offensive abilities (spells, your OB, backstab chance), but it reduces all that is effective-level based (including e.g. size of store spell pool, chance to save spells, PB, etc.).
